Hi Catherine, Just a heads up that I may be headed out to the west for a few days to see if I can lend a hand with the trouble, it'll be dangerous, but you're welcome to come along if you want. (edited)Here is the specs for the ship:
Cargo:50 tons medical supplies
50 tons colony supplies
50 tons Postech building supplies.
Crew: 3 pilots 2 marines
Full ship design as follows: (edited) Dear Catherine,
Greetings from the Elysium Protectorate, we presented the case for bringing Thjodhild into the Protectorate, and the conclusion was reached that it should be mutually beneficial. We hope to visit some time later this month, however we also need to establish bases on planets between Thjodhild and Heras, so that we have good lines of support and communication, so this could take some time, but I look forward to visiting again, and working with you again.
Sincerely
Valentina Spiros Hello my dear,
You don't need to call me highness and all that. Makes me dizzy. The title would be Herald of the Protectorate. Or Hot P for short. Just kidding. Valentina told you our decision then, good. I actually met Governor Shriven before, he seems to be a reasonable man. With the help of Ognyena I will take care of any misunderstandings. Don't you worry. I will send him a message soon. I can't wait to visit the planet of yours.
Until then, let the flame in your heart guide your way.
Herald of the Protectorate
Hedwig SakharovGreetings Ms Sakharov,
First, allow me to begin for apologizing for any breach of protocol—I have never written to a leader of a galactic confederation. However, I saw in the news you are now the leader of the Elysium Protectorate and it’s Minister of State? Congratulations on your coronation!
My name is Catherine Fraiser; by now I trust your explorer Valentina has returned to your world and told you of me? I owe her a great debt for finally helping me get off this planet and back on my feet after 4 years as a captive of these local tribes. I have recently returned to the planet with a shipment of humanitarian aid in hopes of even slightly alleviating their suffering. I am sending you this letter in hopes of beginning a dialogue.
Valentina suggested your empire might have interest in Thjodhild as a member. Unfortunately, I can not speak for the people of this world; however, I will gladly relay and translate any letter you wish to send. So far, the tribes do not seem very receptive to off-worlders, but I hope with time to sway their attitudes. A letter from a great diplomat would probably carry more impact than my poor words.
My understanding of your galactic laws is rudimentary at best; but as I knew in the past, the first person to step foot on a world gets first claim. So you have right of first refusal, before I reach out to any other pollities.
Thank you for your time, your grace.
Catherine FraiserYour Highness,
Thank you for your offer of support of Thjodhild. I look forward to Valentina’s return, and will help however I can. I do have one request, as a matter of honor. Ad Astra was very gracious to donate supplies to alleviate the initial suffering of the people here. If you intend to claim this planet, is there anyway you can repay Ad Astra for their kindness here? If not, after this planet is stable, I might have to work in one of their labs or as a secretary to help keep my conscious clean.
Thank you again!
Respectfully,
Catherine Fraiser### INCOMING SECURE MESSAGE ###
To: Catherine Fraiser
Fr: Daitrij Sakharov
Dear Catherine,
the UNW is indeed interested in this planet and the system as a whole. They need some more buffer worlds to protect their more valuable worlds. Should the UNW try to contact you again, feel free to tell them whatever you want to, the Elysium Protectorate has nothing to hide.
Although we are still in negotiations, there is a chance that our hands might get tied and we become unable to help Thjodhild and it's people. But fear not, we will try to find a way to help. Please note that the EP ship present on Thjodhild is important to us and we can't risk it. But I told the Captain to stay as long as he thinks it is safe and get you where you want to go. His assessment of the situation on the planet is what counts tho, and he has orders to leave the planet should he deem his crew and the ship in danger.
You are not acting in the name of the Elysium Protectorate, not yet at least, you are acting on your own. But as you are allowed to use the Voice or Hermes as a means of transport, I want to know what the people on Thjodhild really need and want, and if resettlement on another world is a possibility.
I hope this message reaches you before things change.
May the flame in your heart guide your way.
Daitrij

Dear Catherine,
the situation on Thjodhild has changed. The UNW took over and robbed us of the chance to help and uplift your people. While I do hope that they will do it themselves now, but I don't know when they will start doing so. I told the Captain to leave Thjodhild. This will happen around the end of the month. The Captain will decide when it's time to do so. I wish you all the best Catherine. May the people of Thjodhild be guided by the flame and rise from their current state. I hope you won't forget what we did for you and the people of Thjodhild.
May the flame in your heart guide your ways.

It is exciting to hear from another scientist who gets her hands dirty in the field to unravel our universes mysteries! This Shaper bioship is thankfully still somewhat functioning, so I have hope that the team of Xenobiologists that are being sent here will be able to learn much from what has been left behind.
I believe the study of this ship is a project for the long-term, so the copy of your research notes and data is highly appreciated. I look forward to reading your article and seeing a fresh perspective on the topic! As our research progresses, I will ensure to keep you informed on our progress and what we uncover.
Respectfully,
Dr. Richard Newmanyeah, not getting good feelings. Beam us out.
She feigns a sigh, keeping a benign chat going til they beam. “actually, I guess never mind. I’d love to continue our chat, but the ship apparently has some weird readings they need me back for.”Hello? Ah, now it is working. Please stop leaning onto me, unless you want to murder me. Is this Pelsagon? Are you from the CBSS? I guess my Spike drive had a malfunction. Maybe we get the fighter repaired again.Oh no! The ship! It was my gift to you and the proud people of the CBSS. Now it's gone. I don't know if my legs are still functional. But at least they are where they belong and the suit seems to be still functional. So sorry for the landing. I am actually a great pilot. Um. Are you an official?
She tries to get up by grabbing Cath.I just crash landed here. Of course it hurts. But nothing like that virus that made my people into who they are now.
She tilts her head when she sees Cathy's confusion.
You should use a different kind of scanner to see my vitals. Something that detects metals or can tell apart different types of synthetic materials from actual biological one. But that is another story.
Nym turns to the wreckage.
Everything gone but the stuff I carry with me. How fitting. What did you say about the CBSS?Um, I'd like my internals to be my privacy, thank you. So no scanner. Unless that is needed to join your peoples' democracy.
Her movement is overly slow and careful. She checks all of her pockets and bags. Most of her belongings are gone with the explosion.
I guess most of would I owned is gone with the fighter. So I would need some new supplies to help. I know they are scarce, but I am worth it. So I didn't see a city out here, which means we are somewhere in the wilds. If you give me a moment to collect myself and make a final check to see if my suit is still functional, well then I could help you with whatever you want to do out here. Must be important right?Clanco? Where is that? They told me the spike drive was fully functional. They told me they fixed it. It cost me all my credits. If I ever get back to those idiots, I will, argh.
She tramples and her upper body is tense. Then as if the remembers something she turns to cath again. A bit more relaxed and with less anger in her tone.
Void Wardens you say? Robert Tanzer got us from this virulent world that ate away at my body. So you can get me to the CBSS, yes? Like if I work for you during my passage? This is good. I then just need money to make the rest of the way. But we'll figure that out. Oh names. Yes. My name is Nym V'tar. Nym is enough tho. What is your name? Did you say it, did I miss it?No shaking, suit check is not yet completed. Ashen One habit. Sorry. But it is a pleasure, Catherine. Do we go now, I don't want to be here any longer. Where to, what for?Not like I have much choice. Your ship, your rules. But. Just as a warning, I am not the most talkative and sometimes get quick outbursts of emotions. Nothing dangerous tho. I guess that comes from not sleeping at all.
Nym's weapon arsenal is all that survived the crash. Besides Nym of course and a bunch of small bags and pockets full of small and medium pieces. All hanging from a belt at her waist and some pockets reach as low as her knees. Her suit finally blinks great and chirps to tell her everything is fine. Nym needs to jog from time to time to keep the pace.headed back now, one survivor. Radio the Adder and let them know we’ll likely be returning early with one more passenger. (edited)I don't want to be a burden. I don't need your doctors, they just cut away from me. I can help you to get done what you want to. It is the least I can do. To work for my passage. And don't you worry too much about me. I am no child.I am a great Pilot. The best. I know, sounds weird from someone who fell from the stars. But I am fine with whatever. I can shoot. Clean up some mess. I am not the talky one. Must be the height and the mask and that I am a woman. Not gonna lie, I am not the charismatic type. At least that's what I hurt. Some people who were afraid of some violent outbursts. But I don't actually know what they mean with that.
She reaches out with her hand to shake Cath's.
Seals are still intact, so it's safe to shake hands. And you will find something to do for me. I will stay with you on your expedition until we are back in civilized space where I can find myself a taxi to the CBSS.That ship starts pretty smoothly. I guess even a kid could fly it. Where are we heading? What is your mission? Is it dangerous? Is it....secret?
Nym doesn't seem to care that Cat closed her eyes. Or that any of the info that she wants might be classified and not for her to know.Maybe they got eaten by a flesh eating virus. Or a virus made them their slaves. Who knows, right? I guess we will find out. I never heard of this planet. Saez. But that is true for most planets. Maybe I learn something that I can offer the CBSS. But, to be honest, I am eager to see the ship that brought you here.
Nym looks out of a window, trying to find a ship. But without the AO Goggles, she is pretty blind when it comes to spotting things. So after a minute she gets pretty frustrated and stops looking out. Instead her small hands check if the contents of her many pockets survived the crash. All that while she waits to step from one ship into another.A heavy kind of frigate? No, not big enough. A Corvette? Maybe. Concealed weaponry or not much weaponry at all? They wouldn't fly around unarmed, would they? Looks interesting.
She turns to Cat.
Let us enter your ship. It looks good. This is a really great ship. Must be fun to fly her. Anyway. So. We are going to this place Saez now. Would you take me with you on the surface or do I need to stay and clean the ship? That is a private thing. Let me handle this alone, please.
Nym enters the medbay and waits for the door to close behind her. Then walks over to the doctor.
Tell her that I am fine. Don't you touch me.
She sighs.
Use your scanner if you wish. But don't touch. I know you folks love to touch and cut out things that look infected. And if you are eager to see something, then don't use your bioscanner. Too much machinery is working inside of me. So quench you curiosity and tell that nice woman that I am fine and able to help. And again, don't you touch me!No! You just tell her that I am fine. That's it. Keep the rest for yourself! There are people who don't like the fact that I am more machinery than biology. I don't want to be spaced and float in the cold emptiness forever just because you felt like telling her too much!
Her small hand, made to a fist, knocks at her head.
This is all me all biological, mostly at least. Like, much of it. So I make my decisions. I don't want the woman to think otherwise.
Thinking that the Doctor will do whatever she just shakes her head turns around and stampedes out of the medbay. Almost blindly running into Cat, as she leaves her quarters.
I hate doctors! (edited)I don't need to..., I mean I am not all too hungry right now. And I don't have much with me. So I don't need a room. I don't sleep, I don't sleep that well alone in a room anyway. So if it would be alowed I would stay on the bridge. And sleep on a chair should I get too tired. I just, uh, follow you around then. And if you need something, I'll help you.
She stays close to Cat for as long as she allows. Of course eager to meet the Captain and visit the bridge. But although she does tend to say inappropriate things, she doesn't push too much for what she wants. All to make sure to not overstay her welcome.Tsatsos would be that home. First Robert Tänzer, the Billy Riggers. There have been quite a few important people who made sure that we still exist now. A bit longer on that damned planet and we wouldn't be here anymore. But the others formed a new culture for our people. One that I didn't want to be part of anymore. Aaaand now I am here. Best pilot the Ashen Ones have ever seen. Where is your home?Oh. Uh, I help you explore.
* She follows Cathy. Eager to finally see the bridge and meet the captain. Once Cat asks for her intentions to join the CBSS she instantly says.*
Because I,.. Then silence. She quietly walks at Cat's side before speaking again.
When on Tstatsos, I had access to a lot of information. I was unhappy. I was looking for a place to go. Where I could be of help with my skills. Where I decide. That is when I read about the CBSS. Their unparalleled workers right. The non-existing class barriers. Their strive to offer their people fulfilled lives. Their will to eliminate the greed for more profit. Real equality for everyone. Everyone gets access to Healthcare and education for free. You need to work hard tho. I mean it is a real utopian idea. But sadly the sources from outside paint a way worse picture of curroption and lack of resources. I want them to become this utopian dreamland. I will help them overcome the struggles. And I will be one of them. Equal. And equally important. Sounds weird huh?I've been around ships for quite a while now. Since I was a baby actually. My family was great at keeping them working even when others said they couldn't be repaired. But they never flew them. Only fixed them or disassembled them. When I was fourteen I got to fly a small shuttle. That's when I knew I wanted to be a pilot. And I do feel like I am quite good at it. Like, exceptionally good. But there is no certificate or anything that I could show. Only your boss over here.
She points at Cat.
She saw me get a broken fighter to the ground after my spike drive had a malfunction. I don't think many would have made it out of it alive, or even brought it down partially intact.
"Although I guess the last part has more to do with who I am and not what I can do. But I won't tell him that." (edited)I am not part of Tsatsos military. I kinda have been part of the military before we got lost and crash-landed on this plagued world. But that doesn't count. So you think I am stealing a fighter that is made out of scrap? A pilot like I am? No. I worked day and night to pay for it. Some parts might have fallen off a truck or a shuttle. But that is not on me. I just paid the mechanics and they got the parts themselves. Ashen One mechanics are really good. They get things built, out of scrap. Better than what I could have gotten elsewhere. I mean yeah. That spike drive was originally from a shuttle and wasn't in good shape anymore. So fitting it onto a fighter wasn't the wisest decision I guess. But I trusted them that it would work. Well, I couldn't handle it. And if I couldn't, nobody else could. So. I am no criminal, no military member and that fighter was not stolen. I am just an exceptional pilot and quite a good shot as well. (edited)Don't worry. But having me on the bridge is as much an honor for me as it is for the Adder. That's fine for me. I guess she is crucial for me not to be put into some cage. So I stay at her side.Maybe they are somewhere under the earth. In vaults or something. Or somewhere on one of the moons. I mean what scans did we do? Shall we send a message down to see if it gets picked up?I am wearing a Vac suit at all times. It isn't all too bad. We could try to get as far as it is save. We may get down. We might find someone or something. I guess any information is better than just leaving. If taking the lighter is the way to go. I could fly it, so we won't risk anybody else on the way down. I mean, just offering my help as the best pilot around.Even a child could fly this thing. I'll get you exactly where you want to go. And as quickly as you want to.
She is quiet for a bit, trying to find some words to cheer Cat up.
If there is something to find, someone alive, we find it. But please fasten your seat belts. I am not your usual sleep pill pilot. So I get us to the point on the map that you chose. If you change your mind and want to land somewhere else, I find a way. No praying needed, at least not therefore. But please check the scanner for the levels of radioactivity. Just so we are safe.I hope you enjoy the ride so far. Perfect weather to show you why taking me with you was a great decision. But aside from the radiation that might grow you another eye, please keep one of the ones you already have on that display over there. I don't know what kind of rain that is, I don't want it to eat through the hull of this Lighter. But I guess we will soon be in the projected landing zone.As you wish.
Excited chirping sounds can be heard as Nym speeds up the lighter again, hoping that visuals get better closer to the ground. But still flies with caution and data from the systems so they don't accidentally crash. Are you okay?I, uh, we can't help them anymore. But maybe somebody else? Did you know them?
Nym doesn't know what to say and how to help Cat.
Should we look for something else, somewhere else?Maybe we find something in your house. Maybe if we don't find someone, maybe we find some memento, at least. Thanks to you this world won't be a forgotten one. You will be living history. And we will find something, or someone. Somewhere there will be something. I am pretty sure. That is, good. So. Where would you go in case of an emergency like, like the end of your world? So, they never came back, right? They may wanted to, but couldn't. So there might be no trace here at all. So where would your former self go? When you were still living here. You can search everywhere, maybe you find something. But what would be the one place that comes to your mind first.Look, if you want to fly somewhere. I'll be your pilot. I get everywhere. If you want to walk somewhere, I, I will make that process need more time. I promise, we will find something. Even if it's only more mementos. But we need to decide for a place to go. This place is radioactive and I have never been here. You mentioned some possible locations. Let's check out one or two. Maybe it's a hit, maybe not. But worth a try.Alright. I'll get us over there and you guide me. I get us as close to whatever you point at.
Once back in the Lighter and properly seated, she gets it in the air again. She hovers over the buildings Cat points at, ready to land close to one that looks like it didn't completely turn to radioactive dust. What is that? It doesn't look as neglected as the rest here.Not. So. Fast. Lady. Please?
As fast as her prosthetic legs can carry her, she runs towards Cat and the ship. Stirring up dust on the way and jumping down the stairs.
Once she reaches Cat, she opens the ship and gets it ready to fly. With some bump, it gets upwards again and she pilots it westwards.
So, I had no time to read anything. To the west you said. Anything specific or do we need to radio them or use our speakers and scanners?Oh yeah, I would definitely trust survivors of an apocalyptic even to act reasonably.
"Yeah, I will definitely visit them armed. I know how desperate groups can be in such a situation. They even cut out everything infected and more to keep you alive."
Nym tries to not further spoil the hope of Cat and gets them close to the supposed location of the camp. Then circles the area to see if they can find anything from above.I am honest with you. I didn't see anything. Like really nothing. So, um, I'll be at your side as long as you tell me where to go.I will make sure that you stay safe. Um, that may doesn't look all to well here, but I've never met anyone who could beat me in anything. Except for scouting. So I don't fear anyone here. I just hope we will find the answers you are looking for.
"And that we are not too late."I cover you. If they aim at me and are good at shooting then no important organ of yours should be in danger. But I can't cover your heart or your head. Sorry. But do your talking, don't let me do it. I am kinda unsuccessful with that. I guess I was just unlucky when I tried last time.Do we.... Food? She tries again. Louder this time.
Do we really have enough food?
She doesn't wait for Cat's answer an grabs a small stone and throws it into the general direction of the noise. We are just a woman and her daughter, with a voice modulator. Trying to help people. You wouldn't shoot us, would you?
" Let's see if they buy that. They shouldn't know Ashen Ones at least."Shall we step forward or stay back, mom? (edited)Won't work anymore. Lost the fight with me. I was afraid that it might hurt you. So it had to be destroyed.
She puts another shotgun shell into her Shotgun as she looks around.
That doesn't look like they were having friends over too often. Whatever the reason, they were defending themselves against someone. So we should stay cautious.
After another short moment she turns to Cat again.
Oh, did you get hurt? You hear that? I guess you should talk to them, I am not too helpful in this matter. But I'll keep you safeI am sorry. I guess one of your turrets won't function again. At least not without someone exceptional at putting together scraps of metal.See, you could be off worse. There could be a flesh eating virus around and doctors need to start chopping limbs off of you. But to be honest, you guys look really thin for humans. So life on this planet seems to not treat you well. Those scrappy turrets won't protect you from anyone desperate to get here. And you all look like you won't survive many more beatings. Look this woman the daughter of two of you. She is with a group that saved my people as well from certain death. So you can stay here and starve and fight for as long as your bodies take you, or ask her how many of you could be brought to the ship and to a better place to live. I could land our shuttle here and bring you up quickly. I mean I wouldn't want to starve. But I don't eat anymore anyway. They do look pretty thin tho. And are used to minimal food. I guess we could take double the number you would normally bring with you, right?I'll take watch then. I am not hungry anyway, or tired.
Nym walks over to Cat and tries to whisper by bringing her modulator output to one of the lowest possible levels.
Just make sure they follow us soon. That place here is neither safe nor really habitable, so don't you dare thinking about staying here too long. I will drag you back to the Adder with my small hands if I have to.No thank you, I am vegetarian. I will snack some seeds when I get hungry, don't worry. And I don't need a tent. I don't sleep to much anyway. So I take a nap outside. I could try to land the shuttle here in the camp if you want to. So it could act as your tent and could be some defensive position if bandits come here unexpectedly.I am going to stay in the shuttle while you have some family time. Call me when you need help so will I. But I am not too happy with letting our shuttle unguarded. Would that be okay for you?Don't you worry about me. I don't want to ruin your reunion.I try to only eliminate what this camp doesn't need. We stay in contact.
With that said Nym waves at Cat and her parents and then leaves the camp to protect the Shuttle.Do you need me to come in? Nym asks. You can almost feel her deciding between which of the several weapons she has is the most potent for this job
